CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Gov. Jim Justice issued a statement Thursday evening endorsing Moore Capito as West Virginia’s next governor.
“Today I am honored to announce my wholehearted endorsement for Moore Capito for Governor and that I will support him in every way,” Justice said.
Justice, a Republican, is the state’s outgoing governor, having reached the position’s two-term limit, and is vying for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Joe Manchin.
Capito, also a Republican, is the son of West Virginia’s other U.S. senator, Shelley Moore Capito, and grandson of former Gov. Arch Moore. He served in the House of Delegates before resigning his seat to focus on his campaign.
Justice said he believes Capito can maintain the positive developments the state has seen over the last few years.
“We have come so far and have turned our state around. We can’t lose our momentum now. ...We have to have someone who will take the wheel and keep us moving in the right direction,” Justice said.
Capito faces a slew of challengers for the governor’s seat in next month’s Primary Election, including state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, businessman Christopher Miller and West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner.
“We have good candidates, and I admire each for their individual accomplishments,” Justice said. “As I have watched this campaign mature, however, I am saddened by the ridiculous mudslinging. I have realized only one candidate is laser focused on continuing to keep us on the path of goodness for all of us.
“Moore has shown he has the vision and knowledge to elevate West Virginia, and I am proud to wish him success.”
